How Common is OCD?

OCD is more common than many people realize. In the United States, approximately 1 in 40 adults and 1 in 100 children and adolescents experience OCD each year. Women report OCD symptoms more often than men, and the average age of symptom onset is around 20 years old. About half of people who report OCD symptoms experience severe impairment from the disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

Yet many people with OCD do not receive appropriate treatment, and some may go years before recognizing that what they are experiencing has a name.

Increasing awareness can help change that.
